about

Limen is a system of five notes making up an A minor 9th chord in root position, with an added 4th above the tonic. Each note is held for a fixed period and then repeated. This period is different for each of the five notes. Each note undergoes a cycle of nine timbral changes. The same cycle is used for each note, but because of the unequal note lengths notes are often played with different timbres. A second cycle, of rests, is also imposed on the note sequence. At each step of the sequence, one of the five notes is replaced by a rest. Again, because of unequal note lengths rests often overlap. The rest cycle is repeated throughout. A rest for a note pauses the cycle of timbral changes, rather than skipping an entry. The piece ends when each of the notes has complete the timbral change cycle. Notes that complete the cycle before the last cease to sound.
